Life Update: Summer 2019
Hi friends! It’s been a little while so I thought I’d give you a short life update. We were vacationing in Newport last week with friends and despite my best intentions, I didn’t get around to posting a recipe while we were gone. But honestly, it was nice to disconnect a bit from the day to day.
We stayed in a stunning Airbnb set in the Augustus Day mansion—a home that was built around 1880 for the descendants of John Jay and John Jacob Astor. The kitchen, dining room, and bathrooms were completely (and gorgeously) renovated, while the living room and bedrooms still featured original floors, fireplaces, built-ins, leaded windows, and coffered ceilings! Every little detail was exquisite. The best part is that we were able to walk to Easton’s Beach AND into town. Okay, and the fact that it was air-conditioned. Which was a must-have for this pregnant lady!
Speaking of which, I’m 30-weeks pregnant this week! Walking was difficult for me at times thanks to the intense sacroiliac joint pain I’ve been struggling with, so we made sure to take lots of breaks on all of our walks and drink plenty of water. And when the days neared 90 degrees, I Ubered wherever I needed to go while the rest of our group walked. We had perfect weather the whole time we were away, shared lots of delicious meals in and out of the house, sailed on a schooner (which was named—wait for it—Madeleine!!!), and relaxed as much as humanly possible for parents with toddlers in tow.
Of course, all good things must come to and end, and boy did they ever. We arrived home Sunday night to find our shared driveway had exploded with fleas (umm, eww) and spent a manic 12 hours addressing the situation. We had our lawn-care provider come to spray first thing the next morning and even had someone inspect (they didn’t find anything) and preemptively treat the interior of our house because if there’s one thing I cannot handle, it’s bugs. Since I’m pregnant and Madeleine is so little, we fled to my parents’ home for the night while the chemicals were sprayed. We don’t have pets (though our neighbor has dogs) but we’re pretty sure it must have been a stray animal, possibly even a raccoon who brought those little terrors to our driveway.
On top of that, we’ve had fraudulent activity on one of our accounts, and I seem to have caught a stomach bug. So not the best welcome home from vacation! But it’s Wednesday, we’re halfway through this hellish week, and I’m already looking forward to the weekend. I guess it’s true what they say—you have to take the good with the bad! And I wouldn’t trade last week for anything. It was the perfect New England vacation and we feel so fortunate to have spent it with people we love.
